DIY Christmas Decorations
9/12/2013
Take a bunch of oranges and a handful of cloves, a few pieces of string and you own creativity. A simple recipe for great sustainable non-waste Christmas decorations that not only look, but also smell good!
We were totally distracted in our last group meeting when Pilar our Spanish educator started playing with her oranges. It turns out she was making Christmas decorations that are beautiful in sight and scent and are not wasteful. The special Christmas ‘treatment’ actually even makes them last longer... Who would have thought! We had a lot of fun making it (and competing for the best design) and we are sure the kids would love it too.

What you need:
- an orange
- a thin ribbon or a pretty string (enough to wrap around your orange twice)
- cloves (fragrant spice pins, not the powdered stuff)
What to do:
-
Wrap the ribbon around the orange, twisting at the base, to divide the orange into quarters.
-
Feed the ends under the piece of ribbon at the top of the orange.
-
Tie a simple overhand knot to secure the ribbon in place.
-
Start pressing cloves into your orange. You can outline the ribbon with cloves first, or on a self-drawn pattern, or just to your own imagination.
Hang it anywhere you like. Sit back and smell Christmas. Enjoy!
