At the beginning of 2012 an enthusiastic group of Spanish speaking ladies started their sustainability journey with a series of sustainable living workshops, organised by Gymea Community Aid and Information in collaboration with the Sustainable Living Project (SLP).

SLP’s educators lead them on a journey to understand the nitty-gritty of our everyday actions impacting the environment. The group got more and more into the different solutions available in their local area. They found many little ways to make a big difference to protect the environment from water and energy efficiency to waste, composting, worm farming and gardening, closing the series with a visit to the Joseph Banks Native Plants reserve.

When we asked about the participants’ experience of the workshops, Corita discussed, “What we have learnt has reminded me of what we used to do back at home in Latin America. Here we have so many options to buy and we think it is the way to do it. But we already know about saving water or saving energy. Now we can feel like we have already done a lot and draw on the knowledge we had”.

One of the most exciting results after this program is the response of the group. They have started to ask about community gardens as a way to practice the knowledge received at the beginning of the year and in the next few weeks they are going to permaculture training. The centre is also planning an exciting trip to community gardens in Hazelhurst or Miranda for early 2012.

We will keep our eyes on their activities and will keep sharing their new ways and activities to help the planet with you!
