The Ethnic Communities Council of NSW congratulates the overwhelming majority of the Federal Parliament for uniting in rejecting the offensive and divisive comments recently made by a new Senator in Parliament.

ECCNSW received with disbelief the words from Katter’s Australia Party Senator Fraser Anning, calling for a ban on migrant Muslims from entering Australia and proposing to celebrate a plebiscite to return to a European only immigration policy.

The Chair of ECCNSW, Ms Marta Terracciano congratulates the Prime Minister, the Opposition leader and the Members of Parliament for their response to the Senator Anning’s speech and for their commitment to maintaining mutual respect and harmony between cultures. “We are a multicultural nation and comments such as these threaten the very social fabric of our society”, stated Ms Terracciano.

Ms Terracciano also thanks those members of Parliament for their bipartisan support “We are pleased that the government condemns racism and a return to the White Australia policy of the 1950’s!”.
