ECCNSW mourns the passing of a true Champion!

by Esther Lozano - Friday, 17 May 2019

The Ethnic Communities Council of NSW pays tribute to the life and contribution of The Honourable Robert H.W. Hawke on his death yesterday, 16 May 2019.

Mr Hawke was an ongoing champion of multiculturalism in his fight to make the lives of ordinary Australians better and to openly combat racism and discrimination of all types, throughout Australia.

He also took an active role in combating racism around the world in being one of the only Western leaders at a time when it was not popular to oppose Apartheid. Furthermore, he and his Ministers were active contributors to the work of The Ethnic Communities Council of NSW and we thank him and his government for their contribution.

His government was also responsible for further bridging the gap and making the lives of migrants and many multicultural communities better in Australia, through the introduction of Medicare and the conclusion of an open multicultural policy that was directly managed through the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

The Ethnic Communities Council, its members and its Chair congratulate and thank Bob Hawke for his achievements and legacy. “A Leader like this will be sadly missed at a time when broad thinking, open and inclusive leadership is most needed. Our thoughts are with the family during the difficult days ahead “ said the Chair, Ms Marta Terracciano.
