ECCNSW response to Premier Berejiklian call to reduce migration intake in NSW

Ethnic Communities' Council (ECC) New South Wales Chair, Ms Marta Terracciano today reacted with disappointment to New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian's comments on the Today show this morning positing that the NSW migration intake "needs to be reduced" and further linking this matter to "infrastructure in place."

"Migration should not be linked to our infrastructure debate; migrants helped build our State's infrastructure, they are not part of the problem they are part of the solution," said Ms Terracciano. "There are complex, numerous explanations for our current state of infrastructure, reducing migration is not a response that will help New South Wales in the long term."

"The Premier noted her support for maintaining our State's Multicultural identity, the way to do that is to support migration, not drastically reduce it," said Ms Terracciano. "We look forward to a more positive dialogue regarding furthering Australia's rich multicultural heritage through the fabric of a successful migration process. The ECC NSW is always ready to engage in such a dialogue to further extend the aims of this State and indeed Australia as the world's greatest example of a successful multicultural community," the Chair concluded.
