Burwood Council Seniors Week Cyber Security Event
As part of this yearโs Seniors Week celebrations, Burwood Council hosted a well-attended Cyber Security Seniors Week event, aimed at supporting older residents to stay safe and confident when using technology and online services. The event up to 90 seniors from the local community, providing a valuable opportunity for older people to learn practical strategies to protect themselves in an increasingly digital world.
The session focused on raising awareness about online safety, common scams, and practical cyber security tips to help seniors recognise and respond to potential online threats. Presenters provided clear and accessible information on how to safely use digital devices, protect personal information, and avoid fraudulent activities such as phishing emails, scam phone calls, and suspicious online requests. The event highlighted the growing importance of digital literacy as more services, including government and health services, are accessed online.
The ECCNSW Inner West Sector Support and Development Officer also participated in the event, providing information delivered in both English and community languages to ensure accessibility and inclusiveness for all participants. The Sector Support Development Officer provided guidance on recent changes to the aged care system, including how older people can access aged care services and navigate the aged care system, as well as practical information on available supports and community services.
In addition, information about initiatives delivered by the Ethnic Communities Council of NSW (ECCNSW), including the Tech Savvy digital literacy classes, which aim to help older people build confidence in using technology and accessing online services was shared. This information was particularly well received by culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) community members, many of whom expressed strong interest in programs that promote digital inclusion and improved access to information and services.
Overall, the event provided a meaningful opportunity for seniors to increase their awareness of cyber safety, connect with local support services, and gain practical knowledge to help them navigate both the digital world and the aged care system with greater confidence.
