ECCNSW Mourns the Loss of George Varughese (24th September 1935 – 29th November 2024)
The Ethnic Communities Council of NSW (ECCNSW) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of George Varughese, a valued board member and active participant in the Members Forum. George, who passed away on November 29, 2024, at the age of 89, was a dedicated advocate for migrant communities in NSW, having served the council for over 30 years.
Throughout his time with ECCNSW, George worked tirelessly to represent the interests of diverse ethnic communities, particularly middle-aged migrants facing language barriers and social isolation. His work extended beyond the council, as he ran a support network in the Randwick area to help people who had lost jobs and were struggling with loneliness. George’s commitment to creating strong, supportive communities reflected his own personal experiences, and his efforts made a lasting impact on many lives.
In addition to his work with ECCNSW, George was a director at the Council of Social Service of NSW (NCOSS) and served for 15 years on the Council for the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Sydney. His passion for peace led to his appointment as an Ambassador for Peace by the Universal Peace Federation.
George leaves behind a legacy of service, kindness, and a profound dedication to community. The ECCNSW offers its heartfelt condolences to his family and joins the many people whose lives were touched by George’s work in mourning his loss. His contributions will not be forgotten, and his memory will continue to inspire us.
Rest in peace, George. You will be missed.
