Speak My Language (Disability)

Funded by the Commonwealth Department of Social Services, this program harnesses multicultural radio, podcasts and social media to share the real stories and advice of people living with a disability, to enable others to live well.

Through simple in-language conversations, the program provides information about inclusive and accessible opportunities, activities and resources available in the community for migrants, refugees and Indigenous Australians. The 500+ audio and video podcasts have been produced in 28 languages, and are available for free to download.

Additional interviews were conducted through our broadcast partner, SBS Audio and NITV.

The Impact

IT IS VERY VALIDATING TO HEAR PEOPLE SPEAK ABOUT DISABILITY
IN MY MOTHER TONGUE.

Rageed Tater
Ayse, Turkish-Australian Listener

The program has changed the lives of thousands of culturally diverse Australians living with a disability, as well as their carers and families.

Over 120 people living with disabilities from CALD and Indigenous Australian communities have shared their lived experience through radio broadcasts, as well as audio and video podcasts.

With over 6,000 downloads online, our audio podcasts have reached audiences in every state and territory, sharing the real stories of people living well with a disability.

One Turkish-Australian listener, Ayse, explained, “I didn’t know how to talk about disability in Turkish very well before – but now I have some words to look up and use when speaking about myself to family and friends. I think this is so validating in my experience as a disabled Turkish Australian person.”
