A Cervical Screening Test every five years is the best way to prevent cervical cancer, which kills one in every three women who are diagnosed with the disease.
Despite this, only 59% of eligible women and people with a cervix are doing the National Cervical Screening Program test when they are due, down from 63% in 2023.
There are now two options for doing the test – one is to have a healthcare provider collect a sample, the other is for women to collect their own sample, in private, at a medical centre. Both are equally accurate and effective.
The self-collection option is great for patients who might feel anxious or embarrassed about having a clinician collect their sample or who are concerned about potential discomfort associated with the use of a speculum.
