Welcome to the
Ethnic Communitiesโ
Council of NSW
The Ethnic Communitiesโ Council of NSW (ECCNSW) is the peak body for all culturally and linguistically diverse communities in NSW. Since 1975, we have been proud to advocate for multiculturalism and represent issues of importance to governments and industry.
ECCNSW is committed to the safety and wellbeing of all vulnerable people accessing the organisation.
We support the rights and wellbeing of our Board of Directors, staff and volunteers and encourage their active participation in building and maintaining a secure environment for all participants.
As the peak body for migrant and refugee groups, ECCNSW works with more than 300 members, including ethnic community groups, multicultural providers, and regional ethnic communitiesโ councils, to represent the interests of ethnic communities.
We undertake a variety of activities, including government-funded projects, to provide a range of programs that builds the capacity and wellbeing of migrant communities.
Our membership base is as diverse as the communities we represent. Membership is open to organisations and individuals who uphold the principles of multiculturalism and want to help see our constitutional objectives realised.
Our Work
ECCNSW works to deliver community programs across key priority areas to improve our multicultural communities.
Our programs help to inform our advocacy work, allowing us to promote the interests of the communities we represent across government, community and independent sectors.
Areas of Focus
Aged Care Advocacy
Supporting older migrants to gain independence, learn new skills and access supports through government & โจnon-government advocacy.
Fostering Disability Inclusion
Providing CALD people with disabilities the resources that support inclusion and wellbeing.
Ending Family & Domestic Violence
Working with CALD men to change behaviour and attitudes towards domestic violence in their community.
Environmental Sustainability
Educating CALD communities and businesses about climate change and sustainable practices.
Encouraging Active Citizenship
Educating CALD communities about civic duties and processes.
Community Wellbeing
Hosting activities, workshops and events that strengthen CALD communities.
Current/Past Programs
Energy Advocacy
ECCNSW believes all members of CALD communities have a right to affordable, reliable and sustainable electricity and gas, have their interests heard in policy and regulatory decisions on electricity and gas, not be disconnected from electricity and gas because they are unable to pay, be provided with information in a culturally relevant and appropriate form about energy policies and services.
The Waterless Wok: Saving Water in Asian Restaurants
Between 2005 to 2009, ECCNSW utilised a range of complementary education strategies to help Asian restaurant owners and staff to reduce their water usage.
Good Neighbour
Good Neighbour is a program that connected local people with refugees and asylum seekers, who were new to the area and arrived without the support of their own friends and family. Volunteers hoped to help newly arrived refugees with the community and its services while building friendships.
Men Against Violence (MAV)
The Men Against Violence (MAV) project aims to engage Wellbeing Connectors (WB) to empower men from CALD backgrounds to become the pipeline for change and challenge current perception towards domestic violence in their community.
