NSW Interpreter Scholarship Program – New and Emerging Community Languages – Open Now
Applications are now open for people who speak in-demand, new and emerging community languages to receive scholarships to become qualified practicing interpreters.
The NSW Interpreter Scholarship Program will be delivered in connected format by TAFE NSW.
People who speak Afrikaans, Amharic, Bislama, Cook Islands Māori, Creole, Dari, Dinka, Ewe, Fijian, Hazaragi, Kannada, Karen, Karenni, Khmer, Kinyamulenge, Kirundi, Konyanka Maninka [Mandingo], Krio, Kurdish-Kurmanji, Lingala, Mongolian, Ndebele, Shona, Somali, Swahili, Tamil, Telugu, Tetum and Tigrinya are invited to apply.
SYDNEY METRO
Applications will be accepted from Sydney Metro residents who speak a key language/s listed above and who fulfill the eligibility requirements.
REGIONAL
Applications will be accepted from Albury and Armidale residents who speak a key language/s listed above and who fulfill the eligibility requirements.

The availability of qualified interpreters in NSW remains an important objective in ensuring that people who do not have a strong understanding of the English language are able to access important government services and programs.
In 2019, Multicultural NSW identified that there were shortages in the availability of interpreters in several languages. A new program was established which offered scholarships to students to become interpreters. The NSW Interpreter Scholarship Pilot Program was launched. Since then, over 250 people have been awarded scholarships to become new interpreters.
