An inquiry has been initiated by the Parliament of NSW to investigate the Alcohol Consumption in Public Places (Liberalisation) Bill 2024.

The bill seeks to lift the current restrictions and bans on drinking alcohol in public spaces, with exceptions for areas designated by regulations as culturally or religiously important, or where individuals are intoxicated or causing a disturbance.

The Chair of the committee leading the inquiry, Portfolio Committee 1, the Hon Jeremy Buckingham MLC, commented: “The committee is keen to explore how the proposed easing of restrictions will be implemented and to gather feedback from stakeholders on any potential unintended outcomes of these changes.”

Peter Doukas OAM, Chair of ECCNSW, represented the organization and contributed to the discussion at the Legislative Council during the hearing on August 12.
