National Asbestos Awareness Week is from 20-26 November 2023. It is important we understand and talk about the dangers of asbestos in our communities.
Asbestos is a natural mineral that was used in many building products before it was banned in Australia. It is common in homes and structures built before 1990.
Asbestos can be dangerous if damaged or disturbed. About 4000 Australians die each year from asbestos-related diseases.
Anyone planning work on an older home should:
- use the asbestos checker to identify where asbestos may have been used
- use the planning checklist to protect themselves and their families
- get advice from a licensed asbestos professional.
Never use high pressure cleaners to clean asbestos roofs as this can spread asbestos contamination.
