New Tool Aims to Improve Outcomes in Colorectal Cancer Care
A new digital tool, Refer4Scope, has been launched to assist primary care practitioners in making quick, guideline-appropriate colonoscopy referrals. Developed by the Daffodil Centre with support from the Cancer Institute NSW, the tool is designed to streamline the referral process and improve outcomes in colorectal cancer detection and management.
Colonoscopy referrals from primary care professionals are a critical part of the colorectal cancer care pathway. These referrals influence how a patient is assessed (either in-person or via telehealth), the costs they may incur, and how long they may wait for their procedure.
Refer4Scope allows GPs to make informed decisions in just a few clicks by entering patient information such as age, screening results, bowel symptoms, or family history of colorectal cancer. Based on the 2023 update to the Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Prevention, Early Detection and Management of Colorectal Cancer, the tool provides immediate recommendations and access to additional resources.
The tool was co-designed with clinicians and is already integrated into several NSW HealthPathways sites to support use at the point of care.
