Proposed Australia–Bosnia and Herzegovina Social Security Agreement Open for Consultation

The Australian Government has developed the text of a proposed new international social security agreement with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The agreement is intended to support people who have lived and worked in both countries by improving access to certain social security benefits.

For Australia, the agreement would cover the Age Pension and superannuation contributions. For Bosnia and Herzegovina, it would cover pension and disability insurance. The agreement includes provisions that allow claims to be lodged from either country, enable periods of residence or contributions in both countries to be combined to meet eligibility requirements, and prevent double payment of compulsory contributions for workers seconded between the two countries.

The Department of Social Services is seeking feedback from stakeholders and community organisations as part of Australia’s treaty-making process. Comments on the proposed agreement are invited by 23 February 2026 and can be sent to [email protected].

If finalised and signed, the agreement is expected to commence 12 to 18 months later. Further updates will be provided as the process progresses.
