Living Safely with Food Allergies: A Multilingual Guide
Food allergies affect people of all ages and backgrounds, and a new diagnosis can be overwhelming โ especially for families navigating the healthcare system in a second language. To help address this, Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia, the nation’s only patient support organisation for allergic disease, has developed a free digital resource: the Managing Food Allergy Quick Guide.
The guide sets out a simple, five-step framework for managing a food allergy diagnosis safely:
- Know โ understanding food allergy, recognising signs of a reaction, and working with your healthcare team
- Prepare โ setting up an action plan and learning to use adrenaline devices
- Act โ knowing how to respond in an emergency, including administering adrenaline and calling 000
- Reduce Risk โ checking food labels, cooking safely at home, and communicating needs when eating out
- Inform โ talking to family, friends, schools and workplaces to build a support network
Importantly, the guide is now available in Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), Farsi, Hindi, Indonesian and Vietnamese, making this potentially life-saving information accessible to more of our diverse community. A multilingual poster and social media assets are also available, allowing the guide to be shared directly with people in their preferred language.
Community members needing an interpreter can call TIS National on 131 450 and ask to be connected with Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia on 1300 728 000.
